On December 4, 2018 the Butler Township Fire Department hosted the Calhoun County Fire Mutual Association’s quarterly meeting at the Knoke Fire Station. During this meeting the Iowa State Highway Patrol, the Iowa Fire Service Training Bureau and the Iowa State DOT conducted a 4 hour Traffic Incident Management (TIMS) training. Fire departments from Knoke, Pomeroy, Knierim, Manson, Jolley, Rockwell City, Lake City, Lytton, and Lohrville were represented. Also in attendance were the Calhoun County Sheriff and deputies, Calhoun County EMS, Calhoun County 911 dispatchers, Pomeroy PD, and DOT.
The following Tuesday evening the Calhoun County Emergency Management together with the Calhoun County Healthcare Coalition conducted a Functional Exercise at the Rockwell City Library. This exercise’s scenario involved at major multiple vehicle crash on US Highway 20. The scenario included a mass casualty incident (including a school bus), persons trapped in their vehicles, a hazardous material spill, and burning round hay bales (the cause of the incident). Organizations and agencies participating in this exercise included Stewart Memorial Hospital and Clinics, Calhoun County EMS, Region V Hazmat, Urban Search and Rescue out of the Sioux City Fire Department, Calhoun County Sheriff and deputies, Calhoun County 911 dispatchers, Calhoun County Public Health, Shady Oaks, Sunny Knoll, South Central Community Schools, Iowa State Highway Patrol and fire departments from Rockwell City, Manson, Pomeroy, Knoke, Jolley, Lake City, Lohrville, Knierim, and Lytton. EMA Coordinators from Pocahontas and Hamilton Counties assisted as evaluators.
