Calhoun County Absentee Ballot
Persons wishing to vote by absentee ballot have 2 options:
* They may vote at the Auditor's office, which is located on the main floor of the Calhoun County Courthouse.
* They may fill out an "Official Absentee Ballot Request Form", which includes their signature, to have a ballot mailed to them.

Code of Iowa Requirements
Requests for an absentee ballot should be made no earlier than 70 days prior to an election. Routinely the Auditors Office issues a press release to announce when absentee ballots are available and ready for voting.

To receive an absentee ballot by mail, an "Official Absentee Ballot Request Form" must be sent that includes: the voter's name, the name and date of the election, the voter's Iowa Driver's License # (ID) (or a nonoperator ID # or Last 4 digits of Social Security number), the address at which the voter is registered, the address to which the ballot is to be sent, and the VOTER'S SIGNATUREDeadline to request an absentee ballot to be mailed is 5:00 p.m. on the Friday before the election. No faxed or email requests can be accepted. The form requires an original signature.

Examples of persons requiring their ballot be mailed to an address other than their registered address would be college students, snow birds, and persons residing overseas (persons in the military)
The Code of Iowa provides for persons who have become hospitalized, within the county, within 3 days of an election; Saturday, Sunday or Monday (or election day), by calling the Auditors Office no later than 4 hours before the polls close. The issued ballot will be personally delivered to that voter at the hospital by 2 election officials who will assist the voter in voting (if requested) and return the sealed, voted ballot to the Auditors Office to be counted on election day.
The last day to vote by absentee ballot is always the day before the election during regular Auditor's Office business hours.
* Absentee ballots returned by mail must be postmarked the day before the election and received by noon on the day of the canvass.
* Absentee ballots returned personally may be delivered to the Auditors Office on election day prior to the closing of the polls
* Absentee ballots may NOT be turned in at polling places except to be surrendered and voided, in which case the voter will be allowed to vote a regular ballot.
* Polls close at 9 pm for Primary and General elections, and 8 pm for Municipal and School elections.
